This year, a new award, The People’s Prize, was added to the roster of awards that comprise The Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize. The winner of The People’s Prize is voted for by members of the public, who chose View from Tate Modern by Art Grad Kieran Naish as their favourite painting.
The inspiration for View from Tate Modern came from a photograph that Kieran took from a balcony during a university trip to the Gallery. Kieran comments that the view is one of his favourite views of London, and on that particular day, the light was such that ‘St Paul’s just looked perfect‘. View from Tate Modern is highly detailed and powerfully atmospheric, qualities which lie at the heart of Kieran’s practice: ‘I like to paint crisp landscapes which have structure and spareness in them. Big skies with a thin strip of buildings. I tend to work on quite a small scale with lots of detail.’
Kieran had only recently moved to London to pursue a career in art, and so winning The People’s Prize has meant that he has hit the ground running. Congratulations, Kieran!
